Facts about Ghana

Geography:
Ghana is a West African country bordering the Gulf of New Guinea. There are four geographical regions in Ghana. The northern region is made up of high plains. The south-west and south-central regions are made up of the Ashanti uplands and Kwahu plateau which are considered a forested plateau region. The coastline is a sandy shore with plains behind it. In the eastern region you can find the hilly Akwapim-Togo ranges.

Currency:
The currency used in Ghana is called the Cedi. One Cedi is equivalent to about one quarter ($0.25) in U.S. currency.

Weather:
I will be traveling to Ghana in January. During that time the temperatures will be in the upper 80s and humid. The weather is considered tropical in the Southwest. In the North it is still hot, but it is dry instead of humid.

Population: approximately 27 million
Capital: Accra 2.2 million

Kindergarten 2 years
Primary 6 years
Junior Secondary 3 years
Senior High School 3 years
- Grading in Kindergarten- Junior Secondary is with numbers
- Grading in Senior High School is with letters
- Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) taken before entering into Senior High School only 150,000 of 375,000 the students who take the test make it into high school

Fun Facts:
  • Ghana's population is is divided among 75 different ethnic groups. 
  • English is the Official Language, but many people also still use local languages as well. 
    • Ga, Dagomba, Akan, Ewe
  • Religion is comprised of about 40% being traditional religions and another 40% being Christian. There are also about 12% of Ghanians who are Muslim.
  • A holiday while I am visiting is Independence Day on March 6th.
